Desalination of oilfield produced waters via reverse electrodialysis: A techno-economical assessment

نویسندگان

چکیده

Produced waters (PWs) are oilfield waste streams rich in minerals and hydrocarbons whose production rate is largely increased last decades following the corresponding increase of energy demand. The high salinity level PWs inhibits adoption cheap biological treatments. Also, desalination techniques based on osmotic membranes would require severe pre-treatments. As an alternative, Reverse ElectroDialysis (RED) Assisted (ARED) here proposed for first time to reduce PWs. RED may also guarantee operation cost reduction thanks its generation. An ad-hoc model ARED developed order deal suitably with This done by a calibration validation experimental data purposely collected via units fed real integrated economical equations techno-economic analysis carried out identify best configuration purposes. Results suggest that mode option guaranteeing minimum controlled dilution 1.32 € per m3 treated, thus leaving room affordable future implementation more sophisticated treatment chains bioremediation.

Desalination/concentration of reverse osmosis and electrodialysis brines with membrane distillation

Brines produced by desalination processes such as reverse osmosis (RO), electrodialysis reversal (EDR) and ion-exchange (IX) holds pollution potential for the water environment if not properly handled. These brines contain a high water content (95–98%) and chemicals that could possibly be recovered for reuse. Therefore, direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) which has the potential for wat...

Retrol Vision: Preliminary Techno-economical Analysis

One of the leading power companies in Denmark, Elsam Kraft A/S, has proposed a vision of the Danish energy sector (end of 2004), with a working title ’’From petrol to REtrol’’ (originally ‘‘From benzin to VEnzin’’, vedvarende = renewable, in Danish). The vision points to changes in the energy sector from being based on combined production of electricity and heat to one based on combined product...

Series assembly of microbial desalination cells containing stacked electrodialysis cells for partial or complete seawater desalination.

A microbial desalination cell (MDC) is a new approach for desalinating water based on using the electrical current generated by exoelectrogenic bacteria. Previously developed MDCs have used only one or two desalination chambers with substantial internal resistance, and used low salinity catholytes containing a buffered or acid solution. Here we show that substantially improved MDC performance c...

Preparation of new composite membranes for water desalination using electrodialysis

The use of polyethersulfone (PES), an excellent but highly hydrophobic thermoplastic, as a matrix material for ionexchange membranes was investigated. To make PES ion-exchangeable, sulfonate groups were introduced to the polymer chains by sulfonation reaction with chlorosulfonic acid. The degree of sulfonation of sPES was estimated to be 21%. Preliminary experiments investigated the effect of p...

Electric Power Generation with Reverse Electrodialysis

The computer simulation program of a practical scale reverse electrodialysis process has been developed based on the program for saline water electrodialysis. The program is applied to compute the performance of an industrial-scale reverse electrodialysis stack (effective membrane area S = 1 m × 1 m = 1 m2, cell pair number N = 300 pairs). The stack operatingconditions are optimized. Seaw...
